The Cougar and the Cub
They called her a cougar,
wise-eyed, silver-laughing, unafraid of time.
They called him a cub,
young, ambitious, and just beginning to find his stride.
At first, they traded stories over coffee.
She spoke of roads traveled;
he spoke of roads still waiting.
Friends raised eyebrows at the years between them,
but neither counted birthdays when they counted smiles.
He loved her confidence.
She loved his wonder.
One evening, walking beneath amber streetlights,
he reached for her hand.
"You're ahead of me," he said.
She squeezed his fingers and smiled.
"Maybe," she replied,
"but we're walking the same direction."
And so they did,
not measured by age,
but by laughter shared,
lessons exchanged,
and the simple joy of finding love
when neither expected it.
